Weekend

We had a nice weekend. We finally made it to Newport and saw the in-laws. Friday night was nice; we drank wine and talked with Dave’s parents at the dining room table, then went to sleep fairly early—but not before beginning the massive amount of laundry we had brought with us! Somewhere along the way, the laundry got neglected and built up into two huge bags of dirty clothes—and we washed them all this weekend! It’s nice to have all new clothes, which doesn’t always get to happen, because there’s no time, or it’s too embarrassing to take all that stuff to the laundromat and have to use nearly every machine.

Saturday morning, we had breakfast with the in-laws and sat around for a bit. I helped Dave’s dad with his computer—an on-going project. The latest was that his screen size had somehow been adjusted to smaller than it actually was, and so he couldn’t see the upper right-hand corner of the windows he had open, and so didn’t know how to close internet explorer. (Have I ever told you how much I can’t stand PCs?) We got that issue sorted out pretty quickly, and then talked a little about how he can never forward messages. I’m sure it’s something to do with how hotmail is set up, but I don’t have a hotmail account, so that will be a project for the next visit.

Dave and I went into Newport later that morning and tried to find our favorite shoe store, Cathers & Coyne. I say “tried to find” because we always forget where it is, and look at its location and say, “no, this is where it used to be, so we should keep walking.” Then we walk for about 20 minutes before turning back and eventually find it right where we started out. We tried to make a mental picture of the store this time—it’s near Bowen’s Wharf, next to a smoothie stand. Hopefully we’ll have an easier time next visit.

We actually headed back home on Saturday night and had all of Sunday to ourselves, which is nice. Weekend trips never work out that way; we usually get back late on Sunday, tired, and Dave has to go to practice. But the Fucking Sparklies have kindly switched practice to Wednesday nights, I believe, which makes Sunday that much more restful.

Of course, Monday morning comes along and it can’t be easy. Our stove stopped working this morning. It was nice enough to let me make coffee and hard-boiled eggs, but that’s it. No dinner for us! I hope our landlord will come help us out this evening—we have a lot of groceries we meant to cook this week…
