Maybe, but they make a mess of the rest of the house...
Oh my.

I have to spend all day at UMass today.
Appointments and more appointments. Here is something that is funny: stick figures in peril on flickr. (Via BoingBoing.)

Solved.
Not Martha has helped solve a couple of mysteries for me. Namely, why did I start receiving issues of Redbook and emails from Intermezzo magazine?
Also solved (after several days): the clogged bathtub. Apparently, the handyman came and tried to fix the toilet this weekend... which is also what got fixed the first time our heat stopped working...

Change of pace.
I am substituting a Spanish class at UMass this week, which has thrown off my schedule somehow- even though it's only two hours out of my day. But I'm getting up at 6:00 this week, and come home super tired. And we have cable now, so, um, lots of ways to waste time and nap. But, I still managed to find two pairs of shoes I like:

Yes, more shoes.
I think I like these shoes. This time, they are inexpensive and for a good cause, instead of ridiculously expensive and just cute. Maybe when I have any money at all, I'll get some!

Little things
In my new-found free time since the semester ended, I have been keeping up with Treehugger quite a bit. As Dave will tell you, I am now officially more obsessed than before with being environmentally responsible. (This also happened to coincide with finding out that we do, in fact, have curbside recycling pickup- nearly a year after moving into this apartment.) My newest mission: replacing our incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. I was thoroughly convinced by these bulbs when I installed them in a couple of stone lamps Dave purchased. These lamps would get really hot with the old incandescent bulbs, to the point where I wouldn't leave them on for more than about a half hour, and now they stay totally cool to the touch even when I use them for hours at a time.
Other changes to my lifestyle over the past few months include finally sucking it up to buy some reusable tote-type grocery bags, and cloth napkins. It doesn't feel like very much to me, these few tiny things, but I guess I do notice a shift in my consciousness about what I use and purchase. Which I like.

We have a problem.
When Clem was a kitten, he used to knock over the trash in the kitchen on an hourly basis. We locked the trash can in the bathroom at night to prevent it. We tried spraying him with a water bottle, but he'd just look at you as if to say, "Is that the best you can do?" and he'd keep digging through the trash, now slightly wet. We gave up on the water bottle after that and got a more serious trash can.
Not long ago, we reinstated water discipline, when Clem realized that the most effective way to drive us crazy was by going after paintings and lamps. Valuable! Dangerous! Perfect! At first, the water was a shock, and it totally worked. It still tends to make him stop what he's doing and run out of the room. But now we have a new problem:
He likes to drink the water out of the bottle. And, of course, we find that hilarious and always will sit there squirting water into his mouth and laughing at our weirdo cat. However, I'm afraid that now he's starting to misbehave just so he can get water... I think we need to get him one of those perpetual cat water fountain dishes... maybe that would help.

All the fun of planning for Transperformance, without having to learn any new songs...
This is fun to read, mixing book titles with band names. Dave suggests Lord Russ of the Flies. (Via The Morning News.)
