This all started as a search for folders.
ooh... I wish I'd discovered this shop before my recent trip to NY, which was spent pretty much right on their street. Today I was tempted to buy a few items, but responsibility prevailed... so far. Responsibility would have a much harder time, however, if shipping were not an issue.

One of many reasons I'd like to visit Paris right now...
I'm pretty sure I need a tattoo from Lionel of Out of Step Tattoos. Needled linked to his website a couple of weeks ago and I can't stop going back and looking at his tattoo gallery. I love so very many of the tattoos he's created and would love to have one.
Unfortunately, being a graduate student hasn't started to pay any better, and I've yet to find a conference in Paris on Medieval Spanish Literature, so... I guess I might be waiting a while for this one. My only other hope would be to convince Off the Map to maybe get Lionel over here.

spree?
I've been doing a bit more shopping lately than might be expected of someone in my financial state... well, what can you do? I needed a new bathing suit and had been putting it off. My old bathing suit is a black bikini I bought in Spain about seven years ago, which seemed normal and basic at the time, but now seems rather skimpy. So I ordered these two pieces from American Apparel:
I also have been working on the ever-challenging hunt for jeans, which finally led me to some success at American Eagle. Since my very perfect, if a bit long, gap jeans are so expensive, I've been looking for alternatives that are not too long. I found two pairs I ilked and bought only one in the store... but then bought the other online...
So, good for the wardrobe... questionable for the wallet...

Checking in, with shoes.
Early fall items at Anthropologie have once again brought a pair of boots I wish I could own:
Each fall, it's these boots that must be by the same company that draw me in- same shape in the toe and heel, same nice leather, and same $328 price tag. This means they will never belong to me.

Change of pace.
I am substituting a Spanish class at UMass this week, which has thrown off my schedule somehow- even though it's only two hours out of my day. But I'm getting up at 6:00 this week, and come home super tired. And we have cable now, so, um, lots of ways to waste time and nap. But, I still managed to find two pairs of shoes I like:

If I had $15, I think I would buy Mama's "I miss Lauryn" t-shirt. I've been admiring it since they got their new inventory, and I kind of do miss Lauryn.

Really what I want is my iPod to be fixed.
Hey, it's been a while since I wrote about things I wish I could buy myself, hasn't it? I'm feeling sort of cranky, frustrated, and agobiada, so I think I'll write a selfish, mindless, shopping post. Who's excited?
Even though Dave and I have a nice digital camera, I sort of want this one. I tell myself it's because it's so small, which would make it easier to take with me than our current, sort of bulky camera. I know it's really because I like the color.
Boots. Have we discussed my uncanny ability to pick the most expensive shoes on a given site and want them? Yeah. It's a highly desirable skill, especially in academia.
Yes, I'm bringing up the apron belt again. What sort of animal is that on the back? I like it.
I like this New York shirt.
I am always drawn to this Nigella knife. What would I chop with it? Who knows. Something good. Maybe something that needs to be weighed.
I wonder if the cats deserve anything as nice as this...
They're the reason Dave and I have never had a Christmas tree... okay, one of the reasons. But seriously, they would be in that thing all day. Which is why maybe we should invest instead in a reproduction of Charlie Brown's pathetic Christmas tree.

I spend this much time away from the internet, and this is what happens.
I don't understand why the dumpster outside my apartment building has been full for so very long. I'll admit that I have no idea when the trash gets emptied, but I would have at least expected it to happen on a weekly basis. I know one thing: it doesn't happen on Mondays, or I would have taken out some trash today. Don't you think it's getting sort of depserate when the first thing you do upon arriving home is look out the window at the dumpster? Yeah, me too.
Since I've already decided I won't be returning to my reading until after Arrested Development (although I did get a good chunk done at the laundromat), I shall procrastinate a bit longer. A friend and I were talking today about Anthropologie, because he had never really known about the store before. I like a lot of the stuff in their new catalog. I can sense how not surprised you are- but there really was a sort of weird dry spell for a month or two there, when they only made really weird, Victorian looking shoes!
I present, for your reading pleasure: the latest things I like at Anthropologie:
Sweater with a fake shirt: like a real shirt, but with fewer steps!
Stork club dress, not that I ever have cause to wear a dress, but I'd like to.
Dollyshop skirt, again, back to the days when I only wore tutus and ballet slippers. I can't escape it.
Glass poppy blouse. The names they give their clothing are so funny, aren't they?
$300 shoes, of course. Is there any way I can get hired somewhere to just pick out the most expensive shoes in a store? Because I'm good at it.
Not to mention the Andiamo purse.
What I really wish is that I had time to continue my adventures in skirt making. I still have black twill and brown wool just waiting to be turned into cute pencil skirts. I will never have time for this. Just like no one is getting any knitted presents this year. No craftiness! Boo. Everyone can have research papers for Christmas, how does that sound?

I no longer make enough money for this.
Well, you'll be glad to know that grad school hasn't distracted me from the important things in life. Like shoes.
I present the latest shoes that I would like to have, but probably shouldn't:
I already have rain boots (it's ok to laugh), but I wish I could justify these. You know, for when you don't want a boot, but you do want rubber shoes? No? You don't have those days?
I'm not into that much of what Anthropologie has right now, but I like these (of course, they're stupid expensive).
I really like these Cynthia Rowley mary janes. I love my two pairs of Cynthia Rowley shoes. But did you know I'm never allowed to buy red shoes again? I have have lots of red shoes.
Lucky for me, these ones aren't available in my size. I really like them in dark brown, but the tan is nice, too.
Ok, time to stop now.

I need another coffee and some food.
I'm dreading having to figure out what items I will need for school. Is grad school like college? Will I just need a couple of notebooks or whatever? I assume so. One item I think I will need to purchase asap is some kind of cushiony sleeve for my laptop, which made a slightly treacherous journey with me today in my crafty tote bag. I had thought that Target might have something for me, but a quick perusal of their website leads me to believe otherwise. Better for me; I was there yesterday and it's really unpleasant when all the college students return.
I would be into getting this Bailey Works one, since I know their bags are really durable. It's a little expensive though, I guess. I don't know.
This one from Flight 001 is sort of what I have in mind. Also in the $40 range. Maybe that's just how much these things cost...
Okay, so more research needs to be done on this, but not right now. I'm totally spacing out, sitting in front of the Isenberg School of Business at UMass, using their wireless connection.

More back to school goodies that will not be making it into my shopping cart, however disappointed that might make me.
Check out this college kit from Vessel. You already know that I am crazy about their products (looks-wise, anyway), so this seems like a great set-up to me. Of course, I'm getting into poor college student mode, right about now, not loaded college student mode, so I won't be picking up a college kit any time in the near future. But, boy would I love to.

Not that the cats have ever caught anything on fire, yet...
Popgadget has a post up about LED tea lights from Modern Motive. Dave can attest to the fact that I have some sort of strange paranoia about candles. Really, I just don't trust the cats. These look just like tea lights (you know, more or less), but won't catch tails on fire. Not as design-y as the Candela lamps at Vessel, but much cheaper.
I'm going to have to spend some time on the Modern Motive site.

I know Higgins would appreciate many of the puns on these t-shirts.
Busted Tees makes great t-shirts. (Well, I can't speak from experience since I haven't bought one yet, but they're funny!) I like this one quite a bit; I think it's new. And, of course, this one, since Eliza and I spent lots of time playing "Oregon Trail" as kids, but I'm not sure how I feel about wearing a t-shirt that has the word "dysentery" on it...

No, I haven't figured out a better way to spend my time today. I'm working on it!
This day is taking a really long time, wouldn't you agree? This is what happens during your last week of work, when your replacement is already here and knows how to do your job, I guess. I've decided that, since UMass has decided not to tell me anything in preparation for my upcoming semester, I will try and make a few guesses. Following is a list of things I would guess I probably don't need for school:
college case life 101 organizer- What? Why? It seems to have nothing to do with school.
apple pencil sharpeners
f*ck eraser
decomposition notebook
Although, we all know I'd get some use out of this.

Have you noticed that Blissen has some of the cutest stuff around? No? Here, just look:
mon-chan doll
native flower pocket pouches
"share" zip pouch
california poppies t-shirt
my pet raincloud necklace
spikey necklace
Yeah, I should stop now. I've always loved the mon-chan doll. Plus, someone there (who used to model hair clips) looks a lot like Lauren P.

You know, I can't even get through a simple crafty wish list without Rosa starting to chew on my hair and turn up the volume on the television.
Because of Kristen, I found out about Plain Mabel. (It's in Northampton! Why didn't I know this before?) I absolutely love all of the following:
Vintage Fabric Coin Purse by Genevieve Dionne, $20
Toiletries Case by Genevieve Dionne, $35 (one left- eek!)
Sewing Machine Tote by Totinette, $42
Dangly Bird Earrings by Tina's Bags, $20
Wood Earrings by P1 Unless Otherwise Noted, $15
Heavenly Kitties Stationery Set by Sewing Stars, $8.50
I know you were wondering.
I have to go... the cats are about to kill me.

The lovely work of Ms. Ong
I have a great purse that Dana Ong made. I bought it three or four years ago and have used it almost every day since then. It still looks as good as the picture, by the way. People always ask me where I got the purse and, for lack of a better response, I'd tell them that it was made by a bartender at Bar 19. Now, however, I can direct them to her website. Much better!
Of course, now I've seen the lightning bolt handbag again, which I had almost managed to forget about. It wouldn't be a bad thing to have one of each, would it?

Oh, there could be so much craftiness!
I just discovered the Gocco love fest over at Flickr. Every few months, something reminds me about the Printo Gocco and I instantly start looking for a cheap one on eBay. I always end up deciding I need to save my money, however, and remain (sadly) Gocco-less. There are a few prospects on eBay right now. If any of them stay in the $5 price range (ha ha), maybe I'll finally get one. For now, I'll just look at the Flickr photos and daydream.

I did once purchase pants from this website and they were really terrible. That's how I got my silver shoes.
After impatiently checking the status of my recent order from La Redoute (it's coming from France, apparently, so I ought to just let it go), I thought I'd take a minute to pick out which things from their fall collection I would like to purchase, but most likely won't. Here you have it, things from this French website that I think are probably pretty cute:
Asymmetric Lambswool Cardigan, $24.99
Striped Scarf, $14.99 (I always like this style scarf; don't know why)
Cashmere & Merino V-neck, $34.99 (I don't know, could be questionable)
Pleated Solid Color Silk Skirt, $39.99
You're welcome.

Didn't I say I needed something to wear to that wedding?
I can't remember where I first heard about Habana Outpost in Brooklyn (Daily Candy maybe?), but I've wanted to check it out ever since. That feeling has only grown as I've explored their website a little more and discovered one of the shops represented in their marketplace: Rubyzaar. They make the most incredible looking skirts. See, I just looked at the site again to say "I especially like the (whatever) skirt," but I can't do that because I really like them all. They're gorgeous and all under $50. It makes it very hard for me to be responsible and not buy anything. I really don't know how long I'll be able to hold out.

Can I say I needed new school shoes? No? Okay.
Well, once again, I have purchased a pair of shoes. This weekend I should find out exactly how many I have... I don't think I want to know.
I just found them very hard to resist, especially on sale for $20. It was $25 with shipping which, in my opinion, is almost like there was free shipping because the shoes were just so cheap! Plus, I got them in black. Believe it or not, I don't really have normal black shoes in my closet. You'll find black boots, black with pink ribbons, tons of red shoes, but nothing that can really serve as the every day black shoe. A perfect example: my every day shoes are silver. That's not normal. So, see? It was a responsible purchase of necessary shoes. Or, at least, that's what I tell myself.
I've bought shoes from La Redoute before and love them. I'm always tempted by the clothes, too, but find them just questionable enough to have to think twice.

I warned you, didn't I?
I've mentioned that my shoe obsession has been with me for as long as I can remember. The one style of shoe that has always had a special place in my heart is the ballet slipper. I remember sitting in my chair at the Winnie the Pooh Kindergarten/Nursery School (in my grandmother's neighborhood) and extending my legs out in front of me so I could look at my pink ballet slippers when my toes poked up from behind the desk. I still feel like that about new shoes and I know I would feel that way if I had a pair of these.
I saw these shoes a while ago on some other website that I could never remember, but today the NY Times had a link to this shop. I visited and, of course, clicked "shoes." Now I know about them again. What's a girl to do?
(La Voleuse are the folks who make these cute shoes. Good job, guys.)

I sense another shoe post in the near future, too.
I love the Candela lamps at Vessel. Yes, there is something totally alien about them, but I still think they're nice. I especially like the Companion Light; it would be perfect for late night reading. I also like the Guardian Night Light, for the same reason, and was pleasantly surprised to see it on sale at cb2 for only $20. See, a few months ago, I would have totally just bought this light because I wanted to. Now, I have to think about it because I need to buy, like, school supplies and shit.

Sometimes it just sounds easier, for some reason.
The part of me that occasionally decides to bake muffins or popovers for breakfast on the weekends, rather than just making scrambled eggs, would very much like to wear an apron made out of these dish towels and this apron belt, while doing so.
Wouldn't that be nice?

It's not as though they actually deserve any presents.
Popgadget has discovered the Highrise Cat Tower at Postmodern Pets. Dave and I are always looking for something fun for the cats to climb- you know, other that the furniture, walls, and curtains. I like the looks of the stackable blocks and the fact that they'd be easy to move and adjust. However, I can only imagine that a tall tower of little cat cubbies would come crashing down at least six times a day if Clem and Rosa were left in charge of it. We learned that lesson the hard way. We will never, ever put tall CD towers anywhere in the house again- especially next to the bed.

Mama cares
After I fixed the problem I was having with comments, I got a nice note from Mr. Mama in which he let me know that, yes, a white girl in Western MA can be a mamacita. Yesterday afternoon, I arrived home from work to find a package on my back porch. Mama had sent me some presents: a few very cute t-shirts, including one that says "Shoe Club." Yup, how appropriate. And, so, I have to tell you something that you may not be able to tell from just looking at the pictures on their site. These are seriously, by far, the softest, most comfortable t-shirts I have ever found.
So, thanks, Mama, for stopping in, saying hi, and for reminding me that Mama "is a state of mind."

Another reason to look for alternatives: the Kenneth Cole online store is out of shoes. No kidding.
I'm thinking of finding an acceptable substitute for the sandals. I'm hoping that I can find something either cheaper or better- preferably both. Here are some that could be in the running:
Malibu Wedge, $69. Cheaper. Not made of raffia, which I think is better. Cuter? Or not cute? I can't quite decide. I think I like them.
These "Matiko" sandals at $94. They're a nice color, although in no way do I need another pair of red shoes.
Carmen Wedge, $38. Cheap. Okay cute, right? Eh.
Sylvia, $55. Cheap, again. But in Spain. $16 shipping is decidedly not so cheap. I mean, not bad for 1 to 2 days from Spain, but it still seems wrong to me.
Also, these (Lucia), $98. Same deal. You know how I feel about paying for shipping.
Suede Wedge w/ Piping, $58. Not bad. Pretty cute and cheaper. Although, on closer inspection... I don't know that I like the "with piping" part.
In the end, I think I like the ones from Anthropologie more than any other. Something about them actually reminds me of a pair of shoes I remember seeing in a book when I was a little girl. I can't quite picture the shoes that I almost remember, nor do I know what book they were in. Yes, I seem to have had this shoe problem since birth, apparently.
Also, somewhat unrelated, but I came across this in my shoe search. Target, are you kidding me with this shit? I mean, doesn't it seem just a little silly?

Green Spirit vs. Vermont Slam. Which makes less sense? I think I know.
It only just occurred to me that someone I know has been in Spain for three and a half weeks and is returning tomorrow. Now, you see, I could have had her pick up any number of things for me at women'secret, but now it's Sunday. The shops are closed. She won't have access to email. I can't write and beg her to pick up something from the new collection they just emailed me about (Thanks again, chicas! It's nice to know what I'm missing.). It's called "Green Spirit." Isn't that funny? I liked all the "Vermont Slam" stuff I saw when I was there in November. Vermont Slam?

Wedding dress
Anthropologie is having a summer sale. They were nice enough to email me about it. So, dedicated as I am to knowing about cute clothes I can't afford, I took a look. I almost have an excuse to buy something: my stepbrother is getting married in a couple of weeks, so I could say that I need something nice to wear. However, now that we're hoping for a new couch, I'll have to wear one of the five thousand skirts I already own. If I were to buy something new, though, it might come from among these items:
Cloudburst tank - $99.95
Kazuri tank - $89.95 (Boy, I must be rich in this daydream.)
Ava skirt - $74.95 (Yes, I know I can't wear any of these items together.)
Invitation dress - $79.95 (It just sounds festive, doesn't it?)
And, well, I won't bother to list all the shoes again.
In the end, however, I'm sure one of my three $8 Old Navy skirts will do for Joel's big (bigger than the Vegas wedding when he was 19) day. I still might need new shoes though...

Ikea's new campaign to take my money
Dave and I went to a barbecue in Queens this weekend. (Everyone finished laughing at how funny that is? Good.) We had a good time visiting friends we hadn't seen in a couple of months. We somehow managed, yet again, to spend a whole weekend in the city without actually going into Manhattan. It's a good way to save money, I guess. Sometime soon, though, we are definitely due for a trip into Manhattan, at least so we can go to Other Music and Anthropologie.
On the way home we stopped in New Haven to go to Ikea. Actually, this was an unplanned part of the New Haven stop. We mostly needed to get some coffee from Dave's favorite coffee shop and wanted to stop in for slices somewhere, since I'd never had New Haven's special pizza. Did you know that you can't get pizza in New Haven at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday? Neither did we. We did eventually get slices somewhere, but not at one of the famous original places. I still enjoyed it, but I don't know what I'm missing, now do I?
So, back to Ikea. Looking at their furniture made us realize that our current apartment is too small for the futon we use for TV and movie viewing. It's a nice piece of furnitre from Fly by Night but, since it's a loveseat lounge, only two people (maybe three) can sit on it at any given time. That means no one can come over for movies. So, we decided we want to sell the futon we have and buy something better for the room. Of course, step one is selling the futon so we can a) afford to buy a new couch and b) fit the new couch in the room. If anyone just happens to want a new futon, email me: kelseyfrost at kelseyfrost dot com. (Pay no attention to how messy our TV room is in the flickr photos.)

Secret
For some reason I signed up to receive email from my favorite Spanish underwear store, women'secret. (See that tricky thing they did with the punctuation? They don't speak English.) It's sad for me because this was by far the best store I ever visited while I was living in Spain. See, they don't just sell underwear; they also sell things that can pass for normal clothing. And everything is cheap, compared to Zara, Mango, Pull & Bear (oh, I loved them, too!), and even Blanco. A little while ago I wrote an email to women'secret to find out if it was possible to have things shipped to los USA, and learned that they don't normally do so, but for a lot of money, anything is possible. Great.
So, this morning I get an email telling me that they're having 2as Rebajas. Do you know what that means? It means the hugest sale of all. In Spain, they have rebajas twice a year, in January and July. This is the time when every store in the country becomes frighteningly crowded because of the cheapness. I haven't managed to be in Spain for rebajas since I was living there, mostly because- who wants to go to Spain in July? No one (except my friends who are there on their honeymoon in Barcelona right now. Hot, isn't it?). For now, I will just have to be content looking at the website and dreaming of all the things I could buy. I'll just hope that, at some point in my graduate studies, Dave and I will return to Spain for a good chunk of time and I can resume my weekly visits to my favorite Spanish underwear store.

It never ends. Really.
I've been searching for these sandals for a couple of months now. I saw someone wearing them at a wedding and didn't ask her where she got them because I had no idea at the time how obsessed I would become with them. Ask Dave; he'll tell you. So, they're out of my price range at this point in my life. Maye I can find them on eBay...

just looking
Once in a while I like to punish myself by looking at what's being offered by Anthropologie. It's punishment because I can usually come up with a number of things I want but will never buy. This is because the instant I see something I like on their website, I click the link only to discover that this coveted item costs upwards of $300. What's a girl to do? Well, I like to set up a wish list so I can punish myself on a regular basis.

Mama
I'm wearing my palabra t-shirt today, which always gets a lot of comments. I got it at a great online shop that closed a few months ago: Cybelle. I bought a few things there. The clothes were cute, they supported female artists and performers, and they always included free stuff (stickers, nail polish, CDs of some of the artists they liked). Since they closed, one of the founders has started a new clothing line, Mama, which seems to be founded on similar principles. I have yet to purchase something from Mama, but I keep checking to see what new designs they come up with. I'm not so sure that, as a white girl in Western MA, I can really get away with wearing what they have right now without feeling like a total jackass. (Does studying Spanish literature make me a mamacita? Um, not so much.) But that doesn't mean I can't look and spread the word, now does it?

No self control
Yup. I bought the shoes. All it took was one phone call from Dave asking if I had bought them yet for me to think, "well, no, but I guess I'll do that right now." And --another reason why I love buying things from Zappos-- they gave me free 2nd day air shipping, which means new shoes tomorrow! As often as they do that, it will never not be exciting for me.
Sigh Club has just posted about her lovely birhtday dinner and it reminded me of just how funny it was to eat birthday cake with chopsticks. It's challenging, let me tell you.

5000M
I have been fantasizing for some time about buying some new shoes. Now, this is nothing new. Pretty much anyone could tell you that I have a serious shoe problem. The internet has just fed this addiction, as I can now spend lots of time just looking at the shoes I want and debating whether or not I should buy them. I almost always decide against buying the shoes, for a while at least, until they go on sale or I can figure out a really good reason why I need them. Lately, I've been day dreaming about a certain pair of Pumas I saw when they fiendishly emailed me the online catalog. These are they:

See, I'm this close to being able to justify the purchase. First of all, I think they're very cute and I like the weird alien tread they have. Very freaky. Second, I love that I can get them at Zappos because of the free, speedy shipping (I hate paying for shipping, which is another reason I so frequently decide against buying things). The thing is, though, I'm about to become a poor college student again. And while, in my opinion, $80 for a pair of shoes isn't that bad, I kind of cringe at the thought of spending that much on sneakers-- no matter how freaky they look. So, anyone want to talk me into or out of this? Anyone?
