I swear, I haven't taken any drugs today. I'm just undernourished!

Hey, so a few weeks ago, the Winterpills song "Hide Me" was featured on the new show Eli Stone, which is on ABC after Lost. Well, apparently they liked "Hide Me" so much they decided to use "Cranky" on tonight's episode! I can't say I blame them-- those are two of my favorites.

Since I've spent my week drinking milk shakes and watching The Wire (wisdom-tooth-removal is a really good excuse for laziness), I think I'll be happy to stick to a similar plan tonight, and see how the song fits into the episode.

(In my defense, I read several medieval chronicles today and the story of Saint Mary of Egypt. I'm forsaking my lovely painkillers for lucidity and productivity. Not that you can tell that from this post... Three texts left on my reading list!)

It's been a couple of years since their last visit.

I'm excited for Califone at the Iron Horse on Tuesday night!

If only because they have a record called "Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord is Dead"

While I am very excited to be heading to New Hampshire this weekend for my grandmother's 80th birthday, I'm a little sad to have to miss the Do Make Say Think show at Pearl Street on Saturday night. I absolutely love this band and really enjoyed the show I saw in Boston a couple of years ago (with our friends The Mobius Band opening). So, if you're in Northampton this weekend, go see Do Make Say Think for me!

The show was great.

winterpills cd release

Winterpills had a really good CD release on Saturday. They sold out the Iron Horse and had lots of good guest musicians. Now they're heading out on the road for most of March, making their way to SXSW. I'm very jealous that I won't get to go with them (Thanks, grad school!).

Now I should get back to reading La voragine. (Thanks, grad school!)

Any plans on Saturday night?

The new CD by Winterpills will be here very soon, and I think you'll like it. They're having a party at the Iron Horse on Saturday. They've also put some of the new songs up on the website, if you'd like to have a listen.

Everything you ever wanted to know about recording with Winterpills

Jose and Winterpills have decided to document the recording of their new record, which took place over the past ten days, or so. Five days have been posted so far, and here's number one:

Hoping to get enough work done for the following:

Levelette, Ideal Rifle and Tal Vez at the Eagles, Friday, 10-ish, free.

Spanish for Hitchhiking and The Mitchells at the Basement, Saturday, 10PM, free.

And most certainly, Winterpills plus Our Lady of Bells at the Iron Horse, next Friday May 26, 7:00 PM, $8 advance, $10 door.

I'd also love to see Henning at Bishop's tonight, but there's no possible way.

Warm it up...

Have you listened to the Number One Show on Valley Free Radio (103.3)? Saturday nights, 8-10 PM. Well worth staying in for those hours. Dave (not my Dave) plays Kris Kross (or however you spell it- the 12 year old rappers from the early 90s), Fanny Pack, and lots of other stuff that you maybe didn't realize you wanted to listen to. You can also stream it in iTunes, if you're not in the immediate Northampton area. Don't forget to cast your vote for the show's "douchebag of the week"!

Not that I really have time to do anything but write papers...

Because of Winterpills (but mostly because Flora and Philip put a bunch of music on my computer last summer), I've been listening to My Favorite a lot lately. It's nice. It's like listening to all the angst of all the weird kids in high school.

Speaking of the weird kids, I'm looking forward to Mark Mulcahy, Kamikaze Hearts and Sitting Next to Brian at the Iron Horse tomorrow night.

It's almost like I'm a normal person.

This weekend, I went out three nights in a row! Lately, I tend to never leave the house; Dave and I frequently convince ourselves to stay in and watch movies on the weekend. This time, however, Dave actually had three shows in three days, and I had to fulfill my drum-carrying wife duties. It was great- I saw friends I hadn't seen in a while, drank a few beers, got my hand stamped a few times- and still managed to get a good amount of reading done. I would say more than usual, actually. That may be unrelated...

This decision came on Friday night when I saw a guy in a nice t-shirt for The Mammals. Turns out he's in The Mammals, but that's okay.

There's a band I like called Brokeback. And there's a certain movie that makes it very hard to find that band with simple Googling. Anyway, I discovered that because I decided I wanted to re-vamp my wardrobe with band t-shirts this year. I like too many bands to have my only band t-shirt be for the Fucking Sparklies. You just can't wear it very often... but I do.

Concerts I'd like to keep in mind, part two.

If I had $20 today, I'd love to go see Stereolab at Pearl Street. Dave and I saw them there a while ago and it was great- also, how we started to be friends with one of our favorite people, who was also there.

This Saturday at The Basement: Abeja and Our Lady of Bells.

Tuesday at Bishop's: Jose Ayerve and some other people I didn't write down.

Next Saturday (3/25) at The Elevens: The Fawns and Spouse.

Have I missed anything?

Little things.

Winterpills are having a busy spring and were away all weekend. Tomorrow, they head off again to SXSW. Dave got home yesterday and this morning I felt this little jolt of excitement when I saw his toothbrush in the bathroom.

Headed to Boston

My good friend, Annie, and I have this thing we do. We'll talk vaguely about some plan for one of us to come to the city where the other lives- months in advance -and then not mention it again until the actual day of the event. That day, a phone call is made from the road to say, "hey, I'll be there soon- do you still want to hang out?" Last time, Annie visited me in Northampton, right before Christmas, and I mentioned this Winterpills show in Somerville. Have we talked about it since? Of course not. But Dave and I will probably get going early this evening and I will call her to check in. I hope it works! Of course, I have other friends in Boston/Somerville, too, who I should be calling. I am a bad friend sometimes.

(If Winterpills ever have a show in Chicago that I can make it to, Kirsten will probably get a little more advance warning.)

I seriously don't want to read Lacan right now. Can you tell?

The Winterpills have started their mini-tour with Erin McKeown, which begins with a show tonight in Pittsburgh, and continues on this week to Burlington and New York. Dave and I were sufficiently lame about it, feeling sad about him leaving yesterday evening. I kept saying, "it's just like you're going to a bachelor party in New York, or something. Just probably without poker." But it was harder for some reason. I think probably because, with any luck, these kinds of trips will keep happening as the band books more concerts.

It's exciting that they're out on the road, playing shows. It's just too bad I'm so busy I can't go along sometimes. I haven't been to New York in a seriously long time, and we were originally sort of planning to spend next weekend there, in time for the shows. But, the end of the semester approaches and more band commitments have been thrown in, so I think it will be just me at home with my work next weekend, instead.

Hey, Winterpills: let's focus on getting some January and summer shows, how about that? I should be free then.

Oh yeah... and I had to get a new computer. Panic! Debt! But also fun...

Dennis and Lauren's Halloween party on Friday night was really fun. Dave and I had gone to visit his cousins for a kid-cenric party in Longmeadow earlier and so had a last-minute costume scramble right before heading over to Orchard Street. In the end, I was Salvador Dalí and Dave had a plastic axe and a temporary-tattoo scar. Yup. Creativity abounds, in our house. Eliza accompanied us to the party in her new bowling uniform, but had other commitments and so left early.

The Bunwinkies were perfectly ghoulish and lovely, in the way only they can be. I like them more each time I see them play. All in all, it was a very good night.

I'm about to read "Discipline and Punish." Maybe it will help me deal with the cats.

My current struggle is to finish all my reading for the rest of the week today, so I can make it out to the Winterpills show tomorrow night (opening for The Mountain Goats, who I just don't feel like linking to, at the Iron Horse). Wednesdays, as you may have heard, are not good for me. If all goes as it normally does, I will hopefully arrive in town on the bus with just enough time to leave my books at home, turn around, and head to the show. If I get stuck at UMass after my class ends, I will be heading directly to the Iron Horse, with all my crap in tow.

The good thing, besides just seeing Dave play, is that my sister-in-law is supposed to be there with a friend, so it will be really nice to spend time with them. (Anyone who was in on the Sarah's-coming-to-town secret is off the hook. She told Dave already.)

Okay, I really need to wrap up this break and get back to Foucault.

I am out of touch.

Did you know that the Bunwinkies are at the Eagles Club tomorrow night? Did you know that Lord Russ is playing at the Basement tomorrow? And Jello Biafra and the Melvins are at Pearl Street? (Tomorrow has a lot of stuff going on...) The one I wish I had known about/wish I didn't know about: Broken Social Scene at Pearl Street Sunday night. I so don't have time for that. But I so wish I did. Should I pay more or less attention to the goings on in Northampton? I'm not sure.

I missed the SFH show on Wednesday, but I will have to make it to the Winterpills show at the Iron Horse next Wednesday.

The Shed

We went with our good friends to the Shed on Saturday night to see Death Vessel as well as some other cool stuff. So, the shed, being a shed, was really small, but it was such a nice place to see a show. Everyone seemed really happy to be there, there was a little fire going outside which everyone stood around between acts. It's nice that the kids living in Palmer have had this place to go hang out and see cool shit. It's sad that this is their last series of shows; they'll be closing up in less than a month. You should try and make it out there before it's all over. I hope we'll be able to go again. Just ask Dennis for directions.

Okay, I have work to do- stop distracting me!

One more thing: this is probably one of my all-time favorite purchases. It came up twice yesterday, so I thought I'd tell you about it. Best wallet ever.

Concert check-in

So remember when I outlined all the concernts I was looking forward to this fall? Let's see how I did:

Seu Jorge, Sept. 9, Pearl Street Too expensive for a poor grad student
Of Montreal and The Management, Sept. 14, Pearl Street Studying
Winterpills CD Release, Sept. 17, Iron Horse Check!
Tortoise, Oct. 6, Somerville Theater Forgot
The Decemberists, Oct. 9, Pearl Street (PENDING)

Will I go to the Decemberists? I don't know. I know I want to go to this and I kind of feel like I want to stay for the whole thing and skip the Decemberists. I guess I'll just see how it goes.

Things that are important

José Ayerve is one of the loveliest people I know, and Dave and I were so saddened by the recent tragedy in his life. He has the details of an important benefit on the main page of his website. I have a lot going on that weekend, but I hope to find time for this. We love you, José, and are thinking of you.

Eliza and I branched out at Moshi saturday; I highly recommend the Rocky roll.

The Winterpills CD release show on Saturday was really great. A ton of people showed up at the horse, including my parents and a bunch of people from school and the old job. It was really nice to have everyone there, even if I didn't get to spend as much time with people as I might have liked. It's just as well: I'm really antisocial at concerts, as many can probably confirm. I just tend to want to listen to the show and not talk to anyone.

A fun Saturday of Moshi and music with my family meant a Sunday spent in the Smith library reading literary theory. Eh, what can you do?

September 15, 2005

Of course, I am perfectly capable of making time to watch the O.C. tonight.

Did I mention I didn't make it to the Of Montreal show last night? The day was just too long and I ended up getting back from Umass just as the show was supposed to start. It's kind of disappointing, since I really enjoyed them last time around. I was hoping to at least get to spend some time with Dave, but with the CD release on Saturday, Winterpills have had a busy week of practices and photo shoots. It worked out for the best, since I got to finish reading La numancia for my class today.

The Decemberists will be here on the same weekend that an important symposium is happening. Hopefully the two events won't really conflict and I can at least get away for the concert. I'm definitely looking forward to both things that are happening that weekend, so I'd like to have it all work out.

How was your weekend?

We had a very rock and roll weekend in Provincetown, with The Winterpills and Spanish for Hitchhiking both playing at The Squealing Pig in Provincetown, MA. It was really nice to have a weekend away with our friends, and I'm always glad to see these bands play. I hope Lauren and Dennis will post their celebrity sightings from this weekend.

Transperformance was not quite the same, since it was in the high school instead of the park, but it was a good time, as usual.

After an exhausting day of orientation, Dave picked me up at home so I could catch some of Transperformance. I didn't get back in time to see The Fawns as Blondie, but I heard they did a great job. Russ and Henning performed one Henry Nilsson song. Russel is always a hit at Transperformance. One guy behind me and Lauren kept saying, "It's Lord Russ!" Either he couldn't believe his eyes/ears, or he wanted to make sure everyone around him knew that HE KNEW.

And Winterpills as Yo La Gershwin (or Yo La Gershberlin)? You had some doubts about that too? Yeah, so did I. They rocked. Dennis Crommett came up with some seriously good mashups of Yo La Tengo Songs and Gershwin standards. (I am not saying this next thing to degrade any other Trans-performers, so please don't take it that way; the bands always do such a great job preparing for this show and I always love seeing everyone perform.) I really think Yo La Gershwin is the most interesting thing that's ever happened at a Transperformance. Am I wrong?

Dennis is an evil genius when it comes to music, I'm afraid. I mean, seriously: I know you've heard the real bands, but have you heard the fake band?

So far, so good.

So, I guess I didn't mention that Friday was my last day at work. I now have a week off before orientation starts at UMass. I've been only slightly freaked out for the past few days, but I think I'm starting to get used to the idea that absolutely everything in my life is changing. I just have to figure out what I will do with this free week. It's been a long time since I've taken a vacation, let alone a vacation spent at home.

So, the only plan I have figured out for today (other than cleaning the kitchen and the litter box) is the Lo Fine show at the Elevens with Our Lady of Bells and Brown Bird. Our Lady of Bells have played a couple of Winterpills shows and are very nice to listen to. I haven't heard Brown Bird before, but Kevin from Lo Fine said he liked what he heard on MySpace. So, it's a Monday night at the Elevens and it's an 8:00 start, with Lo Fine planning to go on at 10:00. See, Kevin wants to make sure everyone gets a good night's sleep after the rock show, so they won't be too tired for work in the morning. Which, of course, I don't have to worry about.

Hi, my name is Kelsey, and I watch Gilmore Girls.

Last night I actually managed to get myself out of the house for a brief period of time. My lovely and talented neighbor, Lesa Bezo, was playing a set at Bishop's Lounge at nine o'clock. Perfect! I was tired and didn't want to do anything, but I had decided that, if Lesa was on first, I could handle a little music at 9:00. It was tough, too, because I got sucked into an episode of Gilmore Girls I hadn't seen before (yes it's a problem and, yes, I will be reading that recap later), and almost didn't make it out the door in time. I got to Bishop's after Lesa had already started (but not much after, I hope) and saw the rest of a lovely, if short, set. On the walk down to the bar, I had the song Make Me Sad in my head, so I was happy to hear her play it. It was a really pleasant way to spend the evening. Both Dave and I were very sorry to miss Josh Crane, who I haven't seen in a long time, but I was exhausted and Dave had a headache, so I met him at home for some quality time with the cats.

Henning will be at Bishop's next Tuesday, in the 11:00 slot, so I'll have to make sure I'm well rested for that show.

A quiet night at home with the Bunwinkies

Last night the Bunwinkies played at the Elevens. They brought in carpets and lamps and set up in the middle of the room, rather than on the stage. It felt like you were sitting in their living room, casually hanging out with them. It was a really nice night. We didn't stick around to see the rest of the show because I was too tired to stay out any later. The Bunwinkies' set left me with a nice feeling for the rest of the night.

I even broke out the old Sparklies bunny t-shirt, which made some people laugh at me, but Scott said it made his night. There are so few places to which you can wear a shirt that says "fucking."

my cameraphone sucks and dave's rocks

The Fucking Sparklies played their second show of the weekend last night at the Eleven's. It was mostly Justin Wentworth as DJ, with a Sparklies interlude around 11:30. I have to tell you something about the Fucking Sparklies. They are seriously good now.

Remember when you first heard them and they were playing this cool, noisy, sort of messy music with extra bits of drum machine and sampler? I do. I liked the Sparklies quite a bit back then. They were playing something different from a lot of the other music in town, which was fun to go see and hear. Personally, I was afraid the band hit this plateau a couple years ago, right after Dave joined the band and before Beth left. What they were doing was good, but it wasn't changing; they weren't playing new material, they weren't playing their old songs in different ways... I got tired of it. Sorry, everyone.

Last night, the Fucking Sparklies seriously blew me away. I felt like I had never heard them before, despite the fact that I knew they were playing some of the old stuff I remembered. The music was interesting, they were tight, the whole set had this great flow to it, one song into the next, not like the old days, when each song ended with Eon declaring that particular song over. Last night they just sounded really together. The overall feel of the night was helped, too, by the great job Jim did on sound; there was a really good mix in the room, despite a little feedback once in a while. I didn't go to the Thursday show, but Dave tells me he thought that one was even better. I hope they will continue to play out more now that they've started again.

Ojos de Brujo

I've been enjoying listening to Ojos de Brujo over the past few months. They're a band from Barcelona who play what they call (and I swear to god this is from their bio) "Jip Jop Flamenkillo" (that's how you'd spell "hip hop" in Spanish). I wouldn't classify it as hip hop; I don't know if I'd classify it as anything. Despite being a mix of different styles, it's definitely Spanish through and through. The guitar sounds Spanish, the vocals are really flamenco sounding, and songs are peppered with typical flamenco palmas.

I picked this record up a while ago after reading a review of it at my favorite record store, Other Music. It was on one of the (many, many) best of 2004 lists compiled by the store's employees. I wasn't that thrilled with it after one listen, but it has definitely grown to be a favorite since. In fact, I'm a little sorry I didn't visit their website until today- they played in New Haven at the end of June.

I think you should check them out.

He also has a song about a turntable.

When I was in high school, I was a huge Ben Lee fan. In tenth grade, my friend Katrina and I somehow came across a zine called "Someone Loves Me in Ohio," which was made by this cool girl named Jeannette who lived in Columbus (I think). We both ended up writing to Jeannette a couple of times and she sent us more issues of her zine and a mix tape. This was one of the two first, best mix tapes I was ever given (the other came from Jason, who I saw last weekend). It introduced me to Elliott Smith, The Smiths, all kinds of girl punk bands, Liz Phair and, of course, Ben Lee. As a teenage girl, you can't not go crazy for a song that includes the lyrics "in the 7-11 of my soul, you're my red slurpee." We spent that year hatching plans to get Ben Lee to come play at the Elvis Room in Portsmouth, NH. Our best plan was to have a bake sale and sell cupcakes with red cinnamon hearts on them and, in that way, raise money for his flight from Australia (or wherever he was from). I spent lots of time listening to the two Ben Lee records I bought that year (and still the only two I have): Away with the Pixies and Grandpaw Would. Okay, I'll be honest, I have probably made Dave listen to at least part of each of these records at some point in the last year. (Okay, maybe it was last month.) Several weeks ago, Dave and I were walking through one of the antique shops on Market Street when I heard a new Ben Lee song playing on their radio. It was the most boring shit I have ever heard in my life.

Plus the Bunwinkies at the Elevens on Monday? Eliza's going to have a tough time at that job interview Tuesday morning.

It was a local music morning on the iPod today. Spanish for Hitchhiking, Winterpills, Thane Thomsen (always such a nice surprise), Mark Mulcahy, and Dennis Crommett. It was a good bus ride.

Dennis played a great show at the Bishop's Lounge last night, with Caleb Wetmore and Dylan Connor (whose set I missed). Caleb's set was really good. I love the Mitchells, although I don't listen to them nearly as much as I should. I think I'll start... Dennis was lovely and charming as usual. He mostly played stuff that will be on his new record (I can't wait!) as well as a couple SFH songs. Caleb actually covered "Tonight We Take the Palace," too. I've gone to so few of these Tuesday night shows at Bishop's. I think I will need to do something about that, especially with the August schedule they have planned.

Tomorrow, the Fucking Sparklies will play the first of two weekend shows. The Thursday show will be at the bowling alley. I don't know where the Sunday show is; ask John Peter.

Varias cosas...

1. The iPod was feeling very Spanish this morning, which was nice. I heard Ella Baila Sola (Amores de barra), Carlos Vives (Fruta fresca), Kiko Veneno (Volando voy), and Lhasa (Desdeñosa). It was nice.

2. The Oscar Meyer Weinermobile was at the Hampton Inn in Hadley this morning. Go get your weiner whistles!

weinermobile
Photo from droolcup's photo stream at Flickr. Thanks, droolcup!

3. Dave and I bought an air conditioner last night. Since he had SFH practice, we installed it in about twenty minutes. After he left, I was still looking at the largely unused instruction manual and thinking "wait-- install a drainage tube?" The thing works well though. The cats hate it a lot (It blocks a window. It causes all other windows to be closed. You can't sit on it. It's noisy.), but they did stay in bed with us all night, so they must see that it has its benefits. And water was only leaking into the bedroom for a short while last night, until I could manhandle it into a better spot where water would actually go out the back instead of the front. Tricky!
